Brave Soldier – Invasion of Cyborgs Review – PlayStation 5

Indie publisher eastasiasoft has yet another 2D side-scrolling run ‘n’ gun pixel art game for players to get their hands on with this one being Brave Soldier – Invasion of Cyborgs from JM Neto Game Dev. I just played through this and Robolt recently and of the two this one is the better entry for fans of this genre. Here is my review of the PlayStation 5 version.

Brave Soldier – Invasion of Cyborgs will have you running and gunning across 30 levels as you try to save Earth from the invading cyborgs. That’s pretty much the whole story of this game right there so you’ll be stepping into the boots of a commando to blast some cyborgs apart. This is another very easy game to play with movement on the stick, jump on the X button, and Square handling firing your gun. Additionally, you have a special attack you can unleash with Triangle if you fill a bar up at the top of the screen. To do this just kill enemies and once it’s full you can unleash a short lasting but powerful blast.

With this game being priced at $5 there really isn’t a whole lot to it. Levels will start off pretty easy with some simple jumps to make but as you get further things like enemies, environmental hazards, and boss fights will provide a bit tougher of a challenge for you and death might become a bit more common. You can also gain some power-ups from defeated enemies that can give your gun a more spread fire attack or the ability to fire multiple bullets. If you pick one of these up though and get hit, you’ll lose it but I never found this to be that big of a deal as finding another one from another defeated enemy was quite common.

Beyond what I’ve talked about so far there isn’t much more to this game. It has some nice pixel art and some different environments like jungles and snow but the level design, enemy types, etc don’t have much variety so I can’t praise any particular thing about this game. It has another easy set of trophies for those types of players so there’s that.

Brave Soldier – Invasion of Cyborgs offers up some solid run ‘n’ gun, platforming action but doesn’t do anything to stand out amongst the crowd. Everything about it is just OK whether that be the gameplay, the level layouts, or the visuals but for a few dollars you can do a lot worse. If you enjoy the genre and have a few bills to spare it can be worth a shot.

*Brave Soldier – Invasion of Cyborgs is available now on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. PlayStation 5 version reviewed. Review copy provided by the publisher for this review.
